Why not 100% organic?

While we love supporting organically-certified farmers, we also want to support those practicing good farming techniques but who are not organically certified.

Most of the farms we work with are very small – under 10 acres – and very eager to transition to a more sustainable farming system. They do go to great lengths to avoid pesticides, unlike super large growers, and when they can’t, we can verify that they use them sparingly. We are working closely with these farms to help them make a smooth and effective transition, which has to happen gradually.

Keeping our Farmer’s Box affordable is another major factor. 100% organic would simply price our Farmer’s Boxes out of most families’ reach. We built Talula Farms to impact a wider group of people who wouldn’t normally have access to fresh and responsibly-grown produce.

The good news is, the more people buy organic/pesticide-free, the more affordable it becomes. It’s a journey, but we’re already seeing some positive signs.

Organic, pesticide-free… What’s the difference?

If something is labelled organic, the farm that it came from has been certified by an official third party (like USDA organic, EU organic, and myOrganic in Malaysia) to have met a rigorous set of criteria.

Natural fertilisation; soil, water, and ecosystem protection; high animal welfare; and no growth hormones, antibiotics or GMOs – these are all broad examples of organic-certified requirements. Generally speaking, the more natural and environmentally sustainable, the better.

There are no official certifications out there for pesticide-free. When Talula Farms describes our produce as pesticide-free, we mean that there were no synthetic or human-made pesticides used.

As an alternative, a number of our farmers actually utilise natural means to protect their crops, like kaolin clay powder as well as an environmentally-sensitive approach known as Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
